The 70-20028 always stays home when Im birding. Fourth shot is 70-200 with the TC 20e iii 56.

F56 for 80-400 Ive found the 80-400mm to be a superb lens.

Nikon 80 400 vs 70 200. I use both the 300 PF teleconverter and the 80-400 AF-S as backups to my 600mm when birding. I would suggest getting the Nikon 80-400 if you want to shoot people as it will give you more continuous shooting time six frames per second at ƒ8. The 70-20028 FL is the lightest closest focussing and least distorting 70-20028 ever.

That leaves only the 200-400 part of the 80-400 as useful to me while still being a 2100 US lens. Gitzo tripod wimberly head VR off no sharpening applied shutter set to timer. At its widest the VR 80-400mm f45-56D ED captures marginally more light 06 f-stops.

Nikon 80-400mm AF-S vs Nikon 70-200mm f28G VR II TC-20E III Center Mid Corner Nikon 80-400mm AF-S Nikon 70-200mm TC-20E III 0 1000 2000 3000 4000 Lens Aperture f8 Imatest Score So if you are willing to stop down to f8 the Nikon 70-200mm f28G VR II TC-20E III is a great combo overall. 80-400 G and first version of 70-200 VR. At 200mm Id give a slight edge to the 80-400.

Both are extremely sharp with the 70-200 slightly better in the lab. Id always choose the 70-200 over the 80-400 without exception in the overlap range. The 200-500 is a bit more stable and may very well be the best bang for the buck value Nikon has produced to date.

Looks like the 80-400mm was designed a little earlier than the Nikon 70-200mm f4G that we reviewed earlier because it comes with the older VR II technology versus VR III on the 70-200mm f4G. Third shot is 80-400 220mm 53. Sold my 200-400mm lens on eBay and now use the 80-400mm as a secondary lens to the 600mm.

The Nikon 80-400 has a bit more telephoto reach then the 200-500. The 80-300 lens is light-weight and does not require a mounting ring. While it is still better than the original VR on the 80-400mm AF-D it is unfortunate that Nikon could not get this one updated to the latest version.

The old 80-400 AF lens is better in the center than the 70-200 VR II combination although thats just right at the center. The 80-400 is a heavy lens like the 70-200 and requires a mounting ring. Second shot is the 70-200 200mm 56.

Fifth shot is the 80-400 400mm 56. Although you lose some light at maximum aperture f4 for 200-400 vs. Both are extremely sharp with the 70-200 slightly better in the lab.

If you want the longest tele the 80-400 will probably be a better choice. Other options I have not mentioned here that might work as well or better than these options. 25 x better wide angle.

I cant say the results would be the same if the shooting distance was. Although it takes a teleconverter well it is generally too short for birds. Since I already have that lens and it is a relatively small lens the 80-200 part of the 80-400 becomes overlap for me.

Jan 27 2021. According to photozone the old 80-400 is f53 at 200mm so from my point of view the choice is based in the prefered range. Less than 13 of the distance away from the center the two are even.

So definitely the 80-400 is not for me. Even more important is that while the rated close-focus distance isnt that much closer the older 70-200s cheated and werent really 200mm at their close-focus distances. The 80-400 is a little faster in AF but is known for getting the jitters with slow moving subjects.

At 400mm the 200-500 is sharper. If your use is divided between belowover 200mm I think the 70-200 is a much better choice. This new 80-400 is the same size and weight as Nikons fully professional flagship 70-200 f28 II but costs 300 more.

The 80-400 is not as sharp as the 70-200 F4. The Nikon 80-400 has a constant aperture of f45 and the Nikon 200-500s constant aperture is f56. Hi Dan great post.

Many photographers have opted to replace the Nikon 80-400 mounting ring - and I must agree. The 70-20028 FL is a huge improvement over the old 70-20028 VR II from 2009. The 70-20028 is an excellent lens but I very seldom use it for birds.

First shot is the 70-200 200mm 28. Nikon 70-200mm f28 FL. 80-400 VR This lens gives more reach and gives the option of much greater focal lengths with a teleconverter and tripod but it is slower to focus than the 70-200 VR but is the 70-200 still faster than the 80-400 if it is used with the TC.
